The short version

Ocean City has taken the next step toward a new Public Safety Building. At its Oct. 22 meeting, City Council approved a resolution that lets the city advertise for construction bids, under City Contract 25-10.

Where it goes

The building will replace the existing police station at 835 Central Ave., on the 800 block behind City Hall. The city's capital projects page says design is underway, with demolition of the old building planned for after Columbus Day. In the mayor's Oct. 23 update, demolition of the police headquarters was expected to start the following week and take about five weeks.

How we got here

The old building has been on the city's capital list for a while. To keep police close to the busiest part of the island during the project, a new police substation at 8th St. and the Boardwalk was built first, and the city lists it as complete.

What happens with the bids

Contractors respond through the city's public bid process. After they are opened and reviewed, a construction contract goes back to council for a vote. We'll share the winning bid and the price once they're public.

When

The city's current schedule calls for construction to start early in 2027 and finish by the end of 2028.

Why it matters

The police station is one of the city's most-used buildings, and the project sits right in the downtown, a block from Asbury Ave. Residents and businesses nearby should expect construction traffic once work begins. The city's capital projects page is updated as the work moves along.

How to follow along

Council agendas and the mayor's weekly update on ocnj.us list each step, from the bid opening to the contract vote. Both are worth a look if you live or work near Central Ave.
