What's being built
The new Leon and Elizabeth Grisbaum Terminal Building replaces a terminal from the 1960s that the city says has reached the end of its useful life. According to the mayor's update, plans include an airport operations center, a golf pro shop, a lobby, locker rooms, a pilots' flight-planning room, restrooms and offices. The top floor will have a full-service restaurant open to the public, with views of the runway, wetlands and bay. The city plans to bid out the restaurant once construction is further along.
The cost
Earlier estimates put the job at about $6 million, so the winning bid came in roughly $1.4 million higher. The funding plan starts with a $3 million donation from Leon Grisbaum and $3 million from the city. A city spokesman told OCNJ Daily the rest will come from savings on other capital projects that came in under budget, so approved debt service will not change.
Council also approved program management (Czar Engineering) and construction management (William McLees Architecture) contracts for the project.
When
Construction is expected to start before the end of the year and take about 14 to 18 months, according to the city.
Why it matters
The airport shares its campus with the city's golf course on the bay side of the island, so the new building will serve both pilots and golfers. A public restaurant also gives people who never fly a reason to visit, and the city expects it to bring in yearly rent once a vendor is chosen.
