After September's nor'easter, the state wants fast Army Corps help for eight shore projects. Ocean City's beach and dune project is on the list.
The short version

What the state asked for
Gov. Mikie Sherrill's administration asked the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for expedited help on eight federal coastal storm projects, from Sandy Hook to Cape May Inlet. The state Department of Environmental Protection finished its damage review quickly and found those projects were badly damaged and at risk without near-term repair.
Where Ocean City fits
One of the eight is the Great Egg Harbor Inlet and Pecks Beach project, the federal partnership behind Ocean City's engineered beaches and dunes. Two other Cape May County reaches are also on the list: Great Egg Harbor Inlet to Townsends Inlet, and Townsends Inlet to Cape May Inlet.
Some context
The timing stings. Ocean City finished a summer beach fill on Sept. 7 that placed 1.6 million cubic yards of sand between the north-end terminal groin near Seaview Rd. and about 11th St., according to the city. Weeks later, the storm took a toll on beaches across the county.
Cape May County's commissioners had asked the governor to seek this help, saying healthy beaches and dunes are the first line of protection for homes, businesses and roads heading into winter.
What's next
The Army Corps reviews the request. No dollar amounts or work dates have been announced yet, and the state has not said which of the eight projects would go first. We'll post an update when those details are public.
Why it matters
Ocean City's beaches are rebuilt through a long-running partnership between the Army Corps, the state and the city. Faster federal help would mean sand and dunes go back sooner, before more winter storms test the shoreline.
